Aktaio is a coastal little town 10km from Patras and 2km from the Rio-Antirrio bridge. It belongs to the municipal district of Rio, municipality of Patras.
The philhellene doctor, Eugene Vernardis, owned the region until the first half of the 19th century and the village, built by the inhabitants of Kalavryta from the Nonakris region, was originally called Vernardeïka. Since 1980’s the village was called Aktaio (literally, coastal). Today, Aktaio has 1,500 inhabitants who, since 1976, have founded a very dynamic cultural association and the basketball team “Aiantas” in collaboration with Arahovitika village. Every year in Aktaio a fête in Pentecost takes place.
